Bruins top prospect Fabian Lysell could miss ‘significant time’ with injury

One of the Bruins’ most gifted prospects might be on the mend for some time.

Providence Bruins forward Fabian Lysell suffered an upper-body injury crashing into the boards during Saturday’s 3-2 loss to Charlotte. The 21-year-old winger appeared to lose an edge right before his collision — with the 2021 first-round pick (21st overall) eventually needing help getting off the ice.

Lysell did not play in Providence’s game against the Syracuse Crunch on Sunday, with head coach Ryan Mougenel sharing a disheartening update after that contest.

“He’s gonna miss, probably, significant time, I would imagine,” Mougenel said of Lysell, per Mark Divver of New England Hockey Journal. “It’s disappointing. He was starting to play really well.”

Lysell has had poor luck with injuries during his time in the AHL. The Swedish forward suffered a concussion during the Calder Cup Playoffs last May that sidelined him for the remainder of the postseason push.

Despite that setback, Lysell has put together another productive year with Providence in 2023-24 — ranking second on the team in scoring with 50 points (15 goals, 35 assists) over 56 games.

Lysell has yet to earn a call-up to the Bruins so far in his young career, with Boston stressing the need for the winger to continue to shore up his 200-foot game down in Providence. But Lysell’s skating and high-end offensive skills paint the picture of a prospect who could carve out a middle-six role at the next level.
