Marc McLaughlin provides small bright spot in ugly Bruins loss

The Bruins put together an abysmal showing against the New York Islanders on Saturday night, losing 5-1 on the road.

If there was any bright spot to be had for the Black-and-Gold, it was the play of Marc McLaughlin, who saw his first NHL action of the season and scored Boston’s only goal of the night.

McLaughlin got ahead in the rush and drove hard to the net while McAvoy carried the puck through the slot. Then, the young forward flipped his hips quickly and put himself in a perfect pocket to take McAvoy’s pass and bury it into an open net.

“I felt good out there,” McLaughlin told reporters postgame. “The pace is a little bit of an adjustment, but I feel like I have enough experience now that I feel a little more comfortable every time I get this opportunity. But, in the end, we fell short, so it’s disappointing.”

The goal is something to be happy about, but not what McLaughlin is focused on during his temporary stay in Boston. He was recalled by the Bruins on an emergency basis on Friday.

“Whenever you get called up like this, you want to come in and try and help the team win, and that’s my main goal coming up,” McLaughlin told reporters postgame. “So, obviously a tough outcome for us and not our best effort for this group, but we got to bounce back next game in Toronto.”

Saturday marked McLaughlin’s 14th NHL game across three seasons. He’s spent most of his time in Providence since leaving Boston College.

Overall, it was a night to forget for the Bruins, who let up five goals before the midway point of the game. They also hardly generated any scoring chances of their own to keep the game close. They’ll remain on the road on Monday, taking on the Maple Leafs in Toronto.
