Bruins forward David Backes will have a hearing with the NHL’s Department of Player Safety Wednesday to discuss his check on Detroit’s Frans Nielsen Tuesday night. Backes was called for interference. Nielsen was injured and didn’t return.

Late in the first period, after Nielsen got rid of the puck along the boards, Backes sideswiped the center. Nielsen did not appear to see Backes’s approach.

Backes has been centering the Bruins’ third line in place of Riley Nash.

The Bruins defeated the Red Wings, 6-5.
