Bruce Cassidy ‘absolutely’ wants to return

Bruce Cassidy, asked if he wants to be back next season as the Bruins’ coach, his “interim” tag removed, was short and to the point: “Absolutely . . . 100 percent.”

Despite losing the first-round playoff series to Ottawa, the Bruins are likely this week, perhaps in the next day or two, to make the hiring formal. The Bruins, dead in the water when Cassidy took over at the start of February, went 18-8-1 to avoid what would have been a third straight playoff DNQ — a fact that could have ended the tenures, too, of president Cam Neely and general manager Don Sweeney.
