Bruins’ best move before trade deadline: Do nothing
Oscar Wilde made his mark as a writer, not as an NHL general manager. His words, however, carry resonance for Don Sweeney and the Bruins ahead of Wednesday’s 3 p.m. trade deadline.
“To do nothing at all,” Wilde wrote, “is the most difficult thing in the world, the most difficult and the most intellectual.”
The easy thing for Sweeney would be to make a trade for the sake of making a trade. Nobody likes being left out of the conversation on deadline day, one of the buzziest dates on the NHL calendar. Trades can energize not just an organization but a fan base, especially one that has not experienced a playoff game since 2014. The business side of TD Garden likes trades because they get fans talking about the team, buying tickets, and watching games.
The difficult thing for Sweeney would be to do nothing. Sitting this one out, however, is the intellectual thing to do.
