Bruins captain Zdeno Chara and New Jersey Devils captain Andy Greene joined the duo at center ice. The 2016-2017 NHL campaign represents the 50th anniversary of Orr’s Bruins debut, as well as the 80th anniversary of Schmidt’s debut season with Boston.
Before the puck drop, Schmidt and Orr spoke with reporters about their experiences on the team. Schmidt praised Orr as “hockey’s greatest.”
“Ladies and gentlemen, you are having the privilege of seeing hockey’s greatest,” he said.
Orr then jokingly handed Schmidt a $20 bill. He later added that he considers Schmidt to be the “greatest Bruin ever.”
“He has to say that because I’m sitting right beside him,” Schmidt laughed.
