Bruins acquire veterans John-Michael Liles, Lee Stempniak at NHL trade deadline

The Boston Bruins acquired a pair of veterans before the NHL trade deadline passed on Monday afternoon, dealing for defenseman John-Michael Liles from the Carolina Hurricanes and forward Lee Stempniak from the New Jersey Devils.

The Hurricanes will receive prospect Anthony Camara as well as a third-round pick in the 2016 NHL draft and a fifth-round pick in the 2017 draft from the Bruins, according to Carolina general manager Ron Francis.

Liles, 35, has six goals and nine assists for 15 points in 54 games this year. In 783 career regular-season games, the defenseman has scored 87 goals with 272 assists for 359 points during stints with the Avalanche, Maple Leafs, and Hurricanes.

Boston shipped a fourth-round pick in the 2016 NHL draft and a second-round pick in the 2017 draft to New Jersey in exchange for Stempniak, according to the Devils.

Stempniak, 33, has 16 goals and 25 assists for 41 points in 63 games this season. He has totaled 181 goals and 229 assists for 410 points in 771 career games. The Bruins will be Stempniak’s sixth team in the last three seasons.
