Boston Bruins

The Bruins’ St. Patrick’s Day jerseys are here, and no, there’s nothing wrong with your computer screen

St. Patrick’s Day is exactly one month away.

That means it’s time for professional sports teams and leagues to roll out holiday-themed apparel.

This year, the Bruins are going above and beyond. Not only are their St. Patrick’s Day jerseys very green, they’re also very plaid.

Currently for sale on the NHL team’s online store for $149.99, the jerseys also feature white shamrocks on each shoulder.

The Bruins are scheduled to play back-to-back away games immediately following St. Patrick’s Day, at the Anaheim Ducks on March 18 and at the Los Angeles Kings on March 19.

Last year, when the Bruins played on St. Patrick’s Day, the team wore green sweaters during pre-game warmups.

It’s currently unclear whether the team will actually wear the jerseys for the game or if they were released with the primary intention of being sold to fans. The jersey, of course, sparked some backlash from hockey fans.

One hockey blogger took issue with the plaid tartan pattern — which is more often, though not always, used in Scottish kilts — to celebrate the Irish holiday.

“Popularly used by the scottish denote their heritage and clan line, usually with a different pattern depending on clan, and then made the official symbolic dress of scotland in the 1700’s,’’ wrote the SB Nation blogger. “On a St. Patrick’s Day sweater. For St. Patrick’s day.’’

Regardless of one’s opinion of the green and plaid-heavy uniforms, at least they haven’t gotten the amount of backlash that the Celtics’ St. Patrick’s Day jerseys got in 2014.
