If you were planning on attending the Copley Square viewing party of the NHL Winter Classic on New Year’s Day, you’re going to want to find other plans.

The free event, which was scheduled as part of First Night festivities and was going to be hosted by Mayor Marty Walsh, was announced on Monday as a partnership with the NHL. By Tuesday, The Boston Globe reports, TD Garden officials notified City Hall that NBC would not give the necessary broadcast permits to allow the event to happen.

According to a statement from the NHL and NBC, “public viewing gatherings for nationally televised regular-season games are not permissible under NHL media-rights policies.’’

This year’s NHL Winter Classic game will feature the Bruins and division rivals the Montreal Candiens and will be played at Gillette Stadium. Despite the abrupt cancellation, Walsh spokeswoman Laura Oggeri told the Globe that officials, “are still very hopeful we can find a resolution.’’
