Boston Bruins forward Chris Kelly suffered a left femur fracture during a 5-3 loss to the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night, according to the team. Bruins general manager Don Sweeney announced that Kelly is scheduled to undergo surgery on Wednesday at Massachusetts General Hospital and expected to miss six to eight months.

Kelly awkwardly fell to the ice during his first shift of the first period of play at TD Garden while attempting to avoid a collision with Stars center Colton Sceviou.

After being down for several minutes, Kelly was helped off the ice by trainers and teammate Zdeno Chara.

“Well, you hope we can somehow compensate for his loss, but I think people are going to realize how important he is to our hockey club, not just on the ice but also in the dressing room and around the team,’’ Bruins coach Claude Julien said after his team’s loss, via NHL.com. “He’s a guy that is extremely respected by his teammates and on the ice he’s given us everything we’ve asked for.’’

The 34-year-old forward had two goals in the first 10 games of the Bruins’ 2015-2016 season. He will be a free agent after the season.
