Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara took a hit from Rangers center Ryan Bourque into the boards in front of the Bruins’ bench Thursday night in the first period of exhibition play.

Chara left the game with an “upper-body injury,’’ according to the team, and would not return.

After the Bruins’ 4-3 win at TD Garden on a Brad Marchand shootout goal, the team said there was no update on their star defenseman.

If Chara’s injury proves to be significant, it’d be the second blow in as many days to the Bruins’ defensive unit. On Wednesday, the team announced that defenseman Dennis Seidenberg would undergo surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back and miss about eight weeks.
