Alex Ovechkin Jokes Ryan Getzlaf is ‘Jealous I Have Hair’
Two days after Anaheim Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf accused Alex Ovechkin of diving, the Washington Capitals star came up with a reason why Getzlaf was ripping him after the Capitals-Ducks game on Sunday.
Speaking with the media after his team’s morning skate on Tuesday, Ovechkin joked that the balding Getzlaf may be envious of the Washington captain’s flowing locks.
“Maybe he’s just jealous. I have hair, he don’t have hair,’’ Ovechkin said, via pregame video from Monumental Network. “We can start talking about it all day long. I think it was comment because he was disappointed they lost.
“I don’t think somebody can call me diver in this league, but how I said, maybe he’s disappointed in all the kind of moments that happen to [his] team… It is what it is.’’
Here’s a look at the play that had Getzlaf so upset, where the Ducks’ captain felt that Ovehckin went down a little too easily when Getzlaf gave him a whack with his stick. The Captials went on to win 5-3, with Ovechkin totaling four points in the game, including two goals.

“I didn’t know he was going to dive the way he did tonight, all over the [expletive] ice. That part of it is a little embarrassing,’’ Getzlaf told reporters after the game, via Helene Elliott of the Los Angeles Times. “Pardon my language. He’s a great player. He’s going to score goals and make plays. That other stuff’s embarrassing.’’
While the hair-angle sure sounds like an interesting one, Getzlaf’s frustration – as Ovechkin noted – probably had more to do with the fact that his Ducks have lost six of their past nine games. Despite the skid, they still hold a 10-point lead over the Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames for first place in the Pacific Division.
