The Bruins were outplayed in their loss to the Islanders for two periods before taking control in the third period. Ultimately, the comeback attempt fell short as the Bruins simply ran out of time, trailing 3-2 in the final ten minutes and dominating possession, zone time, and pouring in a total of 35 shots at Chad Johnson in the third period alone. Former Bruin Johnson made some big saves, such as this one on Carl Soderberg in the third period.

He mentioned Lucic specifically as one of his best friends after the morning skate, and the two friends clashed early in the game with a collision in the Islanders zone.

It was also an emotional game for fans because Zdeno Chara mysteriously left the game in the middle of the first period and did not return. Chara left with a knee injury as a result of the huge hit he delivered on John Tavares shortly before he left. Although he took another shift after the hit, he left the game after that.

The Islanders appeared to score first early in the game, but the referee quickly waived it off and Anders Lee of the Islanders was given a penalty. Had the goal counted, it would have been Boychuk’s goal.

The Islanders ended up with the first goal regardless, as Frans Nielsen scored his first goal of the season. The goal was a result of messy defense by the Bruins and unfortunate bounces, as Dougie Hamilton kicked it in past his own goaltender, Niklas Svedberg.

Svedberg played well, making a few big saves such as this one in the first period on John Tavares.

With less than two minutes left in the first period, Milan Lucic tied the game on a great pass from Seth Griffith. The goal was a result of excellent passing all around, going back into the Bruins defensive zone breakout.
