Bruins 2-1 Loss to Colorado In .Gifs
The Bruins fell to 1-3-0 on the season with a loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Monday afternoon with less than one second left in regulation of a tie game. The Avalanche had not scored a goal yet this season coming into the game, having lost by a combined score of 8-0 to the Minnesota Wild in their first two games of the season. Both teams started the back-up goaltenders in Reto Berra and Niklas Svedberg, and the first period saw no goals and ten shots for each team. Some of the better chances for the Bruins came off of the sticks of Loui Eriksson and Patrice Bergeron.

Each team also took two penalties in the first period. Brad Marchand was called for goaltender interference, although this one looks questionable and was perhaps sold a bit by Berra.

On the power play, Matt Duchene showed why he is one of the best players in the league with some slick moves.

Niklas Svedberg made some big saves in his first start of the season.

The Bruins got a power play when Cody McLeod high-sticked Adam McQuaid, but the power play was fruitless.

McQuaid made some good plays on defense in the first period, although this fumbled 3-on-1 can be attributed to the Avalanche player fanning on the pass.

The Bruins got another chance on the power play late in the period following an Avalanche penalty for too many men – and it was an egregious too many men penalty. This screen cap shows the six players on the ice:

The power play was short lived. Zdeno Chara took a penalty for tripping off the faceoff that began the power play.

The two teams played 4-on-4, and Loui Eriksson had another good chance in the final seconds of the first period.

Second period
Colorado struck first with a fluky goal that somehow eluded Svedberg. It was probably a goal he should have stopped, but snuck between his body and elbow in what should have been an innocent shot. The goal was scored by Jamie McGinn, assisted by Tyson Barrie and Matt Duchene, and was Colorado’s first goal of the season.

The Avalanche committed a second too many men penalty, and this time with even more players on the ice. The following screen cap from NESN shows seven players on the ice at once.

Dennis Seidenberg blocked a shot with his helmet, but suffered no injury.

After clashing earlier in the game when McLeod got a high sticking penalty, he and McQuaid dropped the gloves at 11:02 of the second period.

Svedberg was called on to make some more strong saves.
[fragment number=18]
Dougie Hamilton was given a roughing penalty at 12:56 of the second period.
[fragment number=19]
Daniel Paille displayed his great speed and skill as well as his talent for somehow screwing up golden opportunities that he creates for himself.

Third period
Seidenberg had a strong defensive play against Duchene in the third period.

The Avalanche scored to take a 2-1 lead, but the goal was overruled on the ice claiming the puck was deflected in with a high stick. After going to to the “war room’’ in Toronto, the “no goal’’ call remained. It was a lucky break for the Bruins, as it appears this was a good goal from many angles.

The Bruins were unable to take advantage of the good luck that kept the score tied 1-1 in the third period. In perhaps his best chance of the season, Milan Lucic shot the puck to the middle of the net, allowing Berra to make an excellent save. Lucic got the shot off after David Krejci, in his first game of the season after missing the first two with injury, was able to get a pass over to him in a 2-on-1 rush.

With less than a second on the clock, Daniel Briere scored the game-winning goal to give the Avalanche their first win of the season and the Bruins their third straight loss.
