Mass. is ranked among top 10 states for collection of property tax revenue

Massachusetts has the ninth highest property tax collection rate in the United States, according to a review of US Census Bureau data by Porch, an online service that connects owners with home improvement professionals.

But its five other New England neighbors ranked higher on the list.

Some states rely on property tax revenue more than others. In Massachusetts, property taxes make up 20.8% of the state’s tax revenue, but in Alabama, that figure is 6.9%, according to the report.

Here are the states with the highest property tax collection rates and the percentage of their tax revenue that comes from these assessments:

  1. New Hampshire (36.5%)
  2. New Jersey (28.7%)
  3. Maine (26.8%)
  4. Connecticut (25.8%)
  5. Texas (24%)
  6. Vermont (23.9%)
  7. Illinois (23.1%)
  8. Rhode Island (22%)
  9. Massachusetts (20.8%)
  10. Nebraska (20.4%)
  11. New York (18.9%)
  12. South Dakota (18.8%)
  13. Florida (18.1%)
  14. Virginia (18%)
  15. Montana (18%)
