Ever feel as if you’re looking for love in all the wrong places? Depending on what state you’re in, you may be.
A new report from Canadian-based real estate site Point2 looked at 18 metrics from divorce rate to wedding costs to determine which of the 50 U.S. states offers the best chance at happily ever after. The report used data from the U.S. Census and Google Trends to score each state.
Unfortunately for Bay Staters, love, like the weather, is a fickle thing. Massachusetts ranked 26th overall, touting the lowest number of weddings per 1,000 people of any state. Though not exactly a wedding destination, Massachusetts was buoyed by the highest well-being index of any state.
New England isn’t all cold and loveless, however. New Hampshire squeaked into the top 10, thanks to high interest in couples retreats and wedding anniversaries (the second highest overall for both). Connecticut also held its own at 15th, with the fifth most dining out opportunities and the fifth highest interest in diamond rings. Marriage in Maine, meanwhile, is built to last. Though a dismal 31st overall, Maine has some of the longest-lasting marriages, a median of 22.3 years.
If you’re looking for the best chance at fairy-tale love, paradise is the place to be. Hawaii ranked No. 1 overall, with the highest interest in romantic dinners and love songs, the second most weddings, and the second highest well-being index. And if you’re looking for “The One” in New Mexico, you may really be looking for love in a hopeless place. The Land of Enchantment is far from it when it comes to marriage, with the second-lowest number of married people, the fifth greatest share of divorced people, and the third lowest number of weddings.
