One of the top places to buy a home away from home is in Massachusetts, according to Homes.com.

Dukes County, comprised of Martha’s Vineyard and the Elizabeth Islands, was recently named among the five best places to buy a vacation home in 2021 by the online marketplace.

The county is a popular vacation home destination for city dwellers in Boston and Philadelphia, according to the site, because folks are drawn to the island community’s slower pace. Vacation homes are red hot right now due to the rise in remote jobs because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The picturesque coastal communities are lined with old, charming homes, ample beach and ocean access, and quaint boutiques and restaurants,” wrote Homes.com.

The National Association of Realtors says nearly 60% of the county’s housing is seasonal vacant homes, according to Homes.com, which pulled the following 2020 Dukes County numbers from the association: Home sales rose 13.8%, the median sales price rose 63.6%, and properties sold 38 days faster than in 2019.

But it’s not cheap: The median sales price was $1.4 million in 2020, according to the association.

The other destinations on the list: Swain County in N.C.; Garrett County in Maryland; and Oscoda County and Alcona County, both in Michigan.
