Illinois beat out Massachusetts to lead the nation in LEED green building, according to rankings the US Green Building Council released Monday. The Commonwealth had topped the list the past two years.

The list is based on the square footage per capita from commercial and institutional green building projects that were certified in 2018, according to the council. Massachusetts certified more than 34.71 million square feet of space with 122 projects.

LEED (or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) “is a proven tool for economic development, and it supports state and local strategies to mitigate climate change and enhance sustainability across the state,” said Meredith Elbaum, executive director of US Green Building Council Massachusetts.
