The town of Brookline was once a part of the city of Boston. In the 1630s the area was pastureland for some Bostonians who received land grants there, according to the Brookline town site.

The town gained its independence in 1705, but Bostonians were never happy about it. In the 1870s the city annexed other outlying areas like Brighton, West Roxbury and Charlestown, but it has yet to succeed in bringing Brookline back into the fold. On the positive side, that freed up Brookline to be named the best suburb in America this year.
