From the driveway, it’s clearly a Cape — four dormers push out of the sharply canted roof, and the building itself seems a bit petite — at first glance. But architect/homeowner Stephen Morrell and his extended family’s construction business have made this 2,306-square-foot house something more.
This home has two bright red front doors. The one nearest the driveway and the single-car garage is for daily use; just inside, there’s a mudroom with a ceramic tile floor and three cubbies with storage under the hinged seats. Opposite the cubbies is a half bath with a pedestal sink.
It’s a step up to the eat-in kitchen with hardwood floors, white Shaker-style cabinets, stainless-steel appliances, wide windows, and black granite counters.
For more formal occasions, the dining room offers a candle-style chandelier and a wood-burning fireplace with brick painted white and a slate mantel.
The star of the first floor is the living room addition Morrell designed. Built in 2004, it offers a cathedral ceiling, a gas fireplace with a wooden mantel and a marble surround, and a Brazilian cherry floor. Several windows, some topped with transoms, look out to the backyard.
The original main staircase leads to a second floor with a hardwood hallway, two carpeted bedrooms, and a main bath that offers a single marble-topped wooden vanity, a ceramic tile floor, wainscot, and a tub/shower combo with a white subway tile surround.
Also on this level is a sunny office with a closet and a French door that opens to a hallway with two stairwells — the one on the left leads down, the one on the right goes to the master suite. The carpeted bedroom, which is about 260 square feet, has a cathedral ceiling, a day bed inset underneath windows, and a double-sized closet with bifold doors. Out in the hallway, there’s a linen closet and the master bath, which features a single gray vanity with a marble counter, ceramic tile flooring, and a shower/tub combo.
The finished lower level houses a carpeted family room with aboveground windows, natural wood wainscot, and cherry built-in storage, as well as a laundry/half bath with a pedestal sink.
The 0.69-acre lot is landscaped and boasts mature broadleaf trees, including a Japanese maple, and a stone patio.
