How much house you can buy with $350,000, all over Greater Boston
Home prices in Massachusetts have been rising steadily for the past several years and the median sale now stands at $342,600, according to Zillow.
In Greater Boston, the increases might be better described as “relentless.” Prices in the city rose almost 7 percent in the past year, trending far above the state average. The same is true for most of the cities and towns within commuting distance of Boston.
Yet there are still some listings to be found near the city that are in line with the prices people are paying throughout the rest of the state. Below are five homes for sale that are representative of what approximately $350,000 will get you in various towns and neighborhoods. They’re ordered from highest price per square foot to lowest.
159 South Street, Jamaica Plain, Boston
$359,000
2 bedrooms
809 square feet
$443.76 per square foot

Not everyone is willing to pay almost $450 per square foot of living space, but for many, this condo will represent a nice balance between proximity to downtown Boston and affordability. The Arnold Arboretum and the shops on Centre Street are both within walking distance, as is the T stop at Forest Hills. The unit is also pet friendly and comes with high-end finishes in the kitchen, and the exterior of the building is set for a refresh in the next few months.
83 Hawthorne St., Weymouth
$339,900
3 bedrooms
1,616 square feet
$210.33 per square foot

Within walking distance of bustling Jackson Square, this bungalow style home has a bit of rustic charm. There’s a lot of light on the first floor, and a built-in china cabinet in the living room. The driveway is gravel, but there’s a detached garage in the back.
209 Bellinghan Ave., Revere
$339,000
3 bedrooms
1,630 square feet
$207.98 per square foot

This single-family home in Revere may not be flashy, but it has a decent amount of space, an eat-in kitchen, and a lot of hardwood flooring. It’s also a 10-minute walk from the Beachmont stop on the Blue line and just a few blocks from the water. Unfortunately, that big attic space you see from the outside isn’t finished.
28-32 Saunders St., North Andover
$350,000
4 bedrooms
1,982 square feet
$176.59 per square foot

As you might have expected, getting a little farther from Boston means getting a little more square footage for your money. In this case, that space comes in the form of a 510 square-foot standalone studio that can be rented out or dedicated to the in-laws. Three of the bedrooms are in the main house. The kitchen is cramped, but it overlooks Sutton Pond.
26 Fairhaven Road, Mattapoisett
$359,900
4 bedrooms
3,279 square feet
$109.76 per square foot

Okay, so maybe Mattapoisett isn’t really within commuting distance of Boston. But with 10 rooms, beamed cathedral ceilings and a large private backyard, this house makes a compelling case for leaving the city behind. The layout combines the best of new and old, including an open layout on the first floor and a wood burning stove. It’s on a major road, but as with everything in Mattapoisett, it’s proximity to the water is a big plus.
