Report: The median cost of a one-bedroom rental in Boston is down 12.6 percent

The price of a one-bedroom apartment in Boston is down 12.6 percent since this time last year, according to a report the Zumper real estate site released Thursday.
The decrease reflects the trend of price drops in expensive rental markets across the nation. Nationwide, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment dropped 0.5 percent month over month in September to $1,225, while the two-bedroom price decreased 0.4 percent to $1,483. The median rent for one- and two-bedroom homes in Boston was $2,210 and $2,680, respectively, according to the report.
Providence, however, saw its median rent for a one bedroom climb 5.2 percent month over month, making it the 12th most expensive rental market in the nation.
Thirteen cities out of the 100 in the report had record-breaking yearly decreases in the median cost of a one-bedroom apartment in September since Zumber started tracking them in 2015:
- San Francisco (-20.7 percent)
- Oakland (-19.2)
- New York City (-15)
- Seattle (-14.9)
- Washington, D.C. (-14.8)
- San Jose (-13.5)
- Los Angeles (-13.0)
- Boston (-12.6)
- Denver (-12.5)
- Irving, Texas (-10.7)
- Wichita (-10.4)
- Corpus Christi, Texas (-8.9)
- Plano, Texas (-8.4)
