Renting

What you can rent for $1,500 per month in Boston compared to other big cities

Spending $1,500 a month on rent will not get you much in the Boston area, or in New York or Washington, D.C. for that matter. But in some of the most populous cities in the United States, $1,500 will get you a very large space.

In a new report, real estate listing site RentCafe analyzed the 30 most populous US cities by calculating the average apartment size and average rent prices, therefore determining the average price per square foot for each. Using this average, the site used the $1,500 per month value to see how many square feet you could get for that price.

In Boston, you don’t get much.

According to RentCafe, you can get 399 square feet of space for $1,500 a month. Though reasonably priced studios can be hard to come buy, there are listings for this price and size in the area. In New York City, however, you can only get about 271 square feet of living space for $1,500, and, as RentCafe notes, apartments that small probably don’t even exist.

On the other end of the spectrum, in Memphis, Tennessee you can get 1,948 square feet of living space in an apartment for $1,500 a month. RentCafe notes that it would also be almost impossible to find an apartment of that size, meaning you’d probably be paying a lot less than $1,500 per month to rent in Memphis.
