The dream of being a homeowner one day is prominent in the Digital Generation — a.k.a Generation Z — a goal its members estimate they will achieve by the time they turn 30 years old, three years younger than the current median home-buying age.
In a study by Freddie Mac that collected data from 1,531 people ages 14 to 23, respondents cited the following obstacles to obtaining that goal: saving for a downpayment (92 percent), an unstable job or job change (68 percent), and student debt (54 percent).
Despite the challenges, 86 percent would like to own a home someday, as the overall majority views homeownership as a sign of success, independence, privacy, and something of which to be proud.
