In a housing market where inventory is low and competition is extremely high, a particularly grisly past won’t stop a condo from snagging offers.
That’s the case with Unit 3 at 838 East Broadway, the South Boston condo where the remains of four infants were found in a freezer in November 2022.
The condo had an offer in only five days, according to the Multiple Listing Service.
Listed for $499,900 on April 26, the 620-square-foot unit has one bed and one bath. It was taken off the market on May 15.
The property is in the news yet again this week because it yielded evidence in an unrelated homicide case, the Globe reported on Monday. Officials identified the mother and father of the four infants, but they announced in April that police would not pursue criminal charges in the case.
When the home first hit the market several months ago, Kristin Weekley of Leading Edge Real Estate, who had the listing and represented the owner’s conservator, told Boston.com that the property, which is located on a corner lot with Medal of Honor Park across the street, was “one of the cheapest units in Southie right now.”
“It’s one of the few that’s under $600,000,” Weekley shared at the time. “It lives very large. You feel very elegant when you’re in there. You feel like you’re in a different time.”
Built in 1869, the French Second Empire property was known as the “Lewis C. Whiton House.” It was named for its original owner, one of the founders of South Boston Savings Bank, according to historic documents.
Nearly a dozen steps lead up to the brick building’s front door under an arched entryway. Located on the first floor, the unit welcomes guests in a 38-square-foot foyer. That leads into a 63-square-foot front hall that flows into the kitchen, which measures 91 square feet. It features white cabinetry and wooden counter space. The refrigerator was removed.
“The floor-to-ceiling windows are insane. They are so beautiful,” said Weekley, who noted that Unit 3 is the largest in the building. “They have great views of the park, and it just makes the space feel so much bigger.”
The 143-square-foot bedroom has a window and a single closet. The white subway tile bathroom features a tub/shower combination.
The property has a closing date of Sept. 5.
