It is hard to believe that at one time, the massive, ornate buildings you see in Back Bay were all single-family homes.

Many of them have since been turned into condos or apartments, one unit per floor.

But 225 Beacon Street, which is currently for sale for $7.9 million, is a survivor. The home has remained a single-family residence since it was built in 1869. It has six bedrooms, five full bathrooms, two half bathrooms, and 6,383 square feet of living space spread across six stories.

Backbayhouses.org notes that, though the home had a few previous owners, its most famous resident was Dr. James Dwight, who lived in the home with his wife during the late 1800s. He was a physician but also a “pioneer of amateur tennis, known as the ‘Father of American Tennis.’’’

Though the home was renovated, historic preservation was taken into account and many original details were left while also adding modern touches. Period details include woodwork, marble fireplaces, crown molding, high ceilings, and chandeliers.

225 Beacon has three skylights, a brick patio, and two parking spaces. You can access the roof from the penthouse, which also has an integrated Jacuzzi steam room.
