Home of the week: A carriage house with an elegant makeover
A condo in a renovated Prides Crossing carriage house is the Home of the week.
Prides Crossing in Beverly is something of a living museum, and gated entryways and carriage houses are among its treasures. There is nothing archaic about this three-bedroom condo, set behind a gated entry in a renovated Jazz Age carriage house.
One of five homes, this middle unit has an entry that hints at the property’s equestrian past; the lines of an arched barn door are subtly built into the face of the building. The door opens into the home’s library, where the floor is an elegant black-and-white Carrara marble in a checkerboard design. Here, a massive wall of bookshelves of maple, stained dark, runs floor to ceiling. A gleaming set of oak stairs leads to the second floor, or you can take the elevator, which is a few steps away in the foyer, hidden behind a six-panel door.
Story continues after gallery.

The main living areas are on the second floor. At the top of the stairs, there is a half bath. Turn left into the eat-in kitchen, a square space with a high ceiling. The cabinets are creamy white, the appliances and stove hood are stainless steel, and the counters are an Italian hunter green marble.
At the opposite end of this floor is the living and dining area, where built-in bookshelves flank a wood-burning fireplace and a bow window unencumbered by draperies spans the breadth of the room and pulls in sunlight. The room’s size accommodates a full suite of furniture along with a grand piano. The ceilings are coffered, and the wainscoting is extensive.
A short hallway off this space leads to a laundry area and ends at a rectangular room used as a den but designed as a bedroom with an en suite bath. The bedroom and the kitchen have access to a 23-by-12-foot deck.
The home’s other two bedrooms are on the third floor. The master suite is spacious with a high ceiling, and it features a skylight, bay window, wainscoting, and a walk-in closet reached via a six-panel door. The full bath also has a skylight as well as a deep Jacuzzi tub framed by white Carrara marble, a double vanity topped with the hunter green marble, and a separate shower.
The third bedroom has a skylight and an en suite bath, and graceful lines of pink roses and peonies are painted across the walls.
The property sits on a crest overlooking the bulk of the 3.3-acre lot, which includes three arbors, a koi pond with fountain, and a flat, grassy area. The home comes with two deeded parking spaces, and the low-slung garage holds two bays reserved for this residence. Behind the garage are raised gardens, one for each of the units. The unit has deeded rights to West Beach in Beverly.
Realtor Amanda Armstrong of By The Sea Sotheby’s International Realty in Beverly will hold an open house on Sunday, Nov. 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
