How the $9 million ‘Downton Abbey’ estate compares to Boston condos

The Dower House from PBS’s hit series just sold for $9 million. What can you buy in Boston for that price?

After going on the market in May, Byfleet Manor in Surrey, England, sold to a British buyer for £5.9M, or approximately $9 million U.S. dollars.

The home has appeared on PBS’s hit drama “Downton Abbey.’’ On the show, it is the known as the Dower House and is the estate of Lady Violet Crawley (played by actress Maggie Smith).

$9 million is a big price tag, but it also goes a long way in the English countryside.

Byfleet Manor has eight bedrooms, four “reception rooms’’ and more than 6,000 square feet of living space. It sits on a 19 acre estate that has a history stretching back to the 7th century, according to its listing agency.

But the $ 9 million sale also covered four other surrounding lots, including three separate “residential units,’’ plus another “development lot.’’ That’s a whole lot of real estate.

How does it compare to what you get for $9 million in Boston? Well, things here are…different. We’ve rounded up some luxurious homes in Boston that in the same price range. You can decide for yourself whether your fantasy home is a giant country estate or a moderately large condo with a view.

For close to Byfleet Manor’s selling price, you can get a penthouse triplex that offers elevator access to each floor. The property has almost 4,400 square feet of interior livings space and includes an exquisite chef’s kitchen with granite and marble slab counters, custom cabinetry, and top-of-the-line appliances.

197 Eighth St., Waterfront Price: $8,200,000 Beds: 5 Baths: 4 ½

Another penthouse located on the Boston waterfront with outstanding views of the harbor. The unit is actually a combination of two penthouse units and offers a state-of-the-art chef’s kitchen, and a formal living and dining room. Byfleet Manor may be elegant, but it doesn’t provide this kind of new age luxury.

5 Byron St., #5, Beacon HillPrice: $6,950,000 Beds: 3 Baths: 4 ½

It may not be a secluded English manor, but this Beacon Hill condo still offers plenty of elbow room with over 5,300 square feet of interior space. It was designed by architect Graham Gund and is located in an 1890 building so you can still have the sense of owning a piece of history. This home also has a large roof deck that offers 360-degree views of the city, and a two-story living room.
