Weston home has a really, REALLY big master suite

With 1,123 square feet, the current owner is justified in calling the master bedroom an “apartment.’’

This vast home was designed by architect E. Kevin Schopfe and sits on over three acres. The home has lots of recessed walls and lighting and a master suite that has been called an “apartment’’ by its current owner. Keith Bedford/Globe Staff

Except for its scale, this unique home designed by architect E. Kevin Schopfe would not look out of place in the new neighborhood rising in South Boston: It is two large rectangles with an exterior design of columns separated by deep recesses where tall windows flood the interior with sunlight.

The current owner calls the second-floor master suite an “apartment’’ and with good reason: It’s 1,123 square feet and lacks only a kitchen to be wholly self-sustaining. The suite lies down a private hallway and opens into the bedroom space, a massive area where the king-size bed sits underneath a perfect circle framed in the ceiling. In a hidden corner is a very large walk-in closet (about 182 square feet) with built-in cabinetry and a skylight. The full bath has a whirlpool tub and separate shower.

Unique home with apartment-like master in Weston

A long, carpeted hallway connects to what was once an isolated office but is now a comfortable living room with a propane fireplace and large, square windows that pull in sunlight and open out to viewscapes of the 3-acre lot that includes a small pond.

This house was built to entertain. And the first-floor living room is proof of that. It is a large space with the fireplace flanked by floor-to-ceiling windows with screened casements, a window design carried throughout the rest of the first floor. The ceiling here is not a blank space, but a conversation starter: A large circle is crossed by beams dramatically illuminated by recessed lights. Along the walls are small recesses, filled with couches and recessed lighting, perfect for chats or some reading time.

The compact kitchen is a keen rectangle of shiny Scavolini cabinets, stainless steel appliances, a shiny electric cooktop, and Corian countertops — all underneath another unique ceiling, this one with widely spaced rectangular beams hiding lights.

At the opposite end of the house, is an open floor plan for a family/formal dining room where less elaborate, but equally dramatic, beams drop from the ceiling to define the space.

Two of the bedrooms, on the second floor, are large; the third has built-in cabinetry.

The full basement has high ceilings and is ready for finishing. The house has a mechanical radon mitigation system.
