This historic Back Bay mansion is splitting into luxury condo units
The Hooper Mansion was originally one of the largest homes in the Back Bay.
The Hooper Mansion at 448 Beacon Street was built in Back Bay in 1889, immediately becoming one of the largest buildings in the neighborhood. Its first use was a private residence for Robert C. Hooper and his wife. Hooper was the treasurer and later the president of the Constitution Wharf Company.
But Hooper’s biggest impact might be that he imported a English bull/ bull terrier mix dog from England and has been credited as starting the Boston Terrier breed.
Now, the once single-family home has been transformed into six luxury apartment units, five of which are still for sale. The building has been under construction since fall 2014 and is expected to be move-in ready by fall 2016.
Three of these apartments have been listed thus far:
– One bedroom, one-and-a-half bathroom 1,250-square foot unit available for $1,350,000.
– Two bedroom, two-and-a-half bathroom 2,398-square foot unit for $3,500,000.
– Four bedroom, four-and-a-half bathroom 4,059-square foot unit for $9,950,000.
Chris Tuite, the exclusive listing agent from Sotheby’s Realty, said now that winter is over he is gearing up viewings for the units.
“These spaces are huge in size,’’ Tuite said. “The ceilings are 13 feet high and there are two units that are 4,500 square feet all in one living level, which is rare for the neighborhood.’’
The building has views of the Charles River and the Boston skyline, along with a concierge, direct elevator access to the individual units, parking included and a rooftop garden.
