Move over, pent house suites. A Boston condo developer is trying to start a new luxury housing trend with ground-floor glass maisonettes in the South End, according to The Boston Globe.

Maisonettes, meaning “little houses’’ in French, typically have high ceilings and private entrances, but are located at street-level. Newton-based company National Development is turning the former Boston Herald headquarters into a complex called Ink Block, which will feature several maisonettes in a 79-unit building.

With entrances located along Traveler Street, the maisonettes will have 14-16-foot ceilings and will range in size from 600 to 1,200 square feet. Prices have not been set, but other condos in the building are going for $500,000 to $2 million.

In addition to the maisonettes, the Ink Block complex features hundreds of new apartments, a Whole Foods, and several new restaurants, according to The Globe. – GLOBE

National Development hopes to start construction this year, but needs approval from the Boston Redevelopment Authority.

While maisonettes are a relatively new concept in Boston, the luxury little houses have become increasingly popular in former office buildings in New York City.
