Sold for $27.5 Million! Go Inside Ron Howard’s Connecticut Home

Hollywood director Ron Howard – whose film credits include “Cocoon,’’ “Apollo 13,’’ “A Beautiful Mind,’’ and “Rush’’ – put his home in Greenwich, Connecticut on the market, and it sold on July 24 for $27.5 million. The estate is located on the enclave known as Conyers Farm between Greenwich and Westchester, New York. Take a look inside the incredible home.

In a press release, independent sales associate Lyn Stevens of Sotheby’s International Realty says the Howards’ vast estate “enjoys breathtaking, panoramic views of Converse Lake and has a warm, welcoming vibe that is felt from the moment you drive onto the property.’’
Stevens and Tamar Lurie of Coldwell Banker were selected to co-market the Howard estate. “I am honored to have been selected to provide brokerage for this iconic property,’’ Stevens said in the release.
-

The Howards’ home is a classic New England estate with six bedrooms, five full baths, four partial baths. The Howard family has owned the property for 20 years. In the same press release, Howard expressed his fond memories of the home, but said it is time for his family to move on.
“We moved 3,000 miles away from the hub of Los Angeles, to raise our family here,’’ the accomplished director said. “Whether we’re watching films in our theatre, walking the trails throughout our property, star gazing in our observatory, or just relaxing with friends and loved ones by the lake, Cheryl and I feel we’ve accomplished the goals we set when we began our work on this place. Our children are grown, so it’s time to move on, but the memories of this very special place will never leave us.’’
-

The home itself has more than 17,200 square feet of living space. And if that’s still too cramped for your style, the property sits on 32 acres and is surrounded by beautiful woods.
-

The two-level foyer has a chandelier, an arched doorway, and connects to the lowered living room.
-

Step further inside the home from the foyer to find an enormous living room and one of the property’s seven fireplaces. Like the rest of the home, this room offers amazing lake views.
-

The living room currently hosts a grand piano and a large harp. Musicians can practice while enjoying views of Converse Lake. An excellent place to play music while soaking in the scenery.
-

Stevens calls the kitchen “the heart of the home.’’ The kitchen has granite countertops, mahogany cabinetry, and a large butler’s pantry.
-

A breakfast nook with windows facing the lake is just off the kitchen and family room.
-

A large structure of glass cabinets encases the kitchen’s breakfast island and divides the kitchen from the family room. The staircase in the back leads to the upstairs bedrooms.
-

The estate is located just one hour from New York City and is ideal for entertaining and large-scale events. The Howards have hosted two weddings on the property, numerous parties, and fundraisers.
-

The formal dining room has a chandelier, another fireplace, and murals of waterfront life. Lurie says the room has Zuber wallpaper paneling – a technique also used at the White House – with aquatic designs.
-

The home has a winterized screen porch with brick flooring allowing the views to be enjoyed year-round and is right off the kitchen. The room connects the family room and the indoor pool.
-

Fans of Howard’s classic film “Cocoon’’ will enjoy going for a dip in this indoor saltwater swimming pool. But unlike the movie, this swimming pool is considerably less likely to be an alien fountain of youth. According to Lyn Stevens, Howard won’t say whether the movie inspired the pool’s design, but says he definitely does not grow younger after swimming.
-

The home’s beautiful master bath has a tub with windows that face the lake, a sitting area, a vanity area, and another fireplace.
-

If you’re looking for a place to curl up with a good book, look no further than the home’s two-story mahogany library and office. This quiet nook of the house has large windows with sitting areas and views of beautiful woods that surround the property.
-

Don’t be fooled, that’s not a window! A small office is part of the library. This area includes a screening room with a large projection screen. As it turns out, a projection of the lake was on the screen when this photo was taken.
-

A relaxing lounge is currently being used as a billiard room in the main house’s lower level. It currently features posters of Howard’s works, from his 1980s comedy “Night Shift’’ to his Oscar-winning masterpiece, “A Beautiful Mind.’’
-

A mudroom in the rear of the home features a functional wood-burning stove that resembles a suit of medieval armor. Ron Howard’s wife, Cheryl, bought the stove at a flea market in California, transported it to Connecticut and reassembled it.
-

What would a Hollywood director’s home be without a private movie theater? According to the Wall Street Journal, this 14-seat theater has a popcorn machine and is where the first screenings of Howard’s movies take place.
-

The Howard estate also comes with a separate 2,500 square foot guest house. The guest house has two bedrooms, two full baths, one partial bath, and overlooks the lake. A sports barn is connected to structure by a two-car garage.
-

The warm and comfortable den in the guest house gets a lot of light thanks to the lake. The room features large built-in bookcases and a fireplace.
-

Getting to the tennis court to improve your serve can be a hassle, can’t it? That is, unless you have your very own tennis court in your very own home. This regulation size court is part of the home’s athletic offerings. Additional amenities include a basketball half court, a yoga studio, and a gym.
-

Sports barn also has a small kitchenette to rehydrate after a workout. The room also has a loft that holds a pinball machine, shuffleboard, and more games. The lower level has a sauna and a hot tub and changing rooms.
-

The surrounding woods and outdoor amenities include riding trails, private parks, and excellent views of nearby Converse Lake.
-

If you’re a fan of Ron Howard’s space-themed credits like “Apollo 13’’ and “From the Earth to the Moon’’ (which he produced), you’re in for a treat. The property includes an observatory with a professional grade Meade telescope, making this home a star-gazer’s delight.
-

The grounds of the estate include an ivy-draped stone head house, beautiful perennial gardens, a Koi pond with a waterfall and pergola, a greenhouse, and an organic raised bed vegetable garden.
-

Equestrian lovers can get plenty of enjoyment from the home’s horse barns and riding ring.
