Weston’s historic Henderson House for sale

The Henderson House in Weston, an English-Tudor style mansion with nearly 17,000 square feet of living space, is being sold for $7,795,000. The impressive estate has more than 25 rooms of living space, eight fireplaces, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The mansion is located on the highest point in Weston known as Mount Pennal. From this vantage point, the property offers exceptional views of the sweeping grounds and beautiful sunsets.

The Henderson House dates back to the 1800s. The original structure of the property burnt down in 1890, and a new home was built as a summer residence in 1926 for Edward Pierce, who made a fortune in the wool business.

The estate used to be known as the Hawthorn because of the abundance of hawthorn trees that were once found on the property.

In the 1940s, Roger Babson, founder of Babson College, purchased the home and winterized it. The mansion eventually was left to Babson’s daughter, then later to Ernest Henderson, co-founder of Sheraton Hotels and a member of the board of directors at Northeastern University.

As large as the property is, it is considerably smaller than it used to be. Babson’s daughter sold off 300 of the property’s original 370 acres.

At one time, the mansion consisted of six or seven buildings, including a carriage house, greenhouse, and even a bowling alley.

Northeastern University eventually took ownership of the estate and converted the property into a center for continuing education, conferences, corporate functions, weddings, and other large-scale events.

Over the years, the home has hosted a slew of notable dignitaries, including Massachusetts Senators Kennedy and Kerry, Governor Mitt Romney, and Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev.

The mansion’s lovely foyer has a double staircase with a gold gilded wrought iron railing.

The 10-light German silver chandelier in the grand reception hallway is original to the house. The room also has matching German silver mirror and tables on opposite walls.

A pair of built-in benches surround a gas fireplace in the foyer. This room’s fireplace is one eight in the property.

The Carey Room is just off the foyer. This large room has been used for wedding receptions, has a Swarovsky chandelier, and another fireplace. Part of the flooring is carpeted, while the rest is hardwood to allow for dancing during receptions.

The Crockett Room has walnut wood paneling and an impressive chandelier in the center of an oval inset. The inset is encased in distinct crown molding in the shape of flowers and fruits. A diamond criss-cross pattern fills the oval with the Northeastern University torch in the center.

The Crockett room also has a ballroom, an all-stone room made of Milford Pink Granite. The room has wall-to-wall carpeting and sunburst windows.

The large blue room in the estate is known as the Kerr Room has two chandeliers, gold gilded crown molding, and his/hers dressing rooms.

The Kerr room has a gas fireplace and also has gold-gilded crown molding. The Monet paintings seen on the walls are prints.

Two large chandeliers hang from a large oval on the Crockett Room’s ceiling. The oval has a beautiful mural and is encased in gold gilded crown molding.

In addition to political dignitaries, Hollywood also made good use of the home. During the 1980s, the home was used to shoot “Spenser for Hire,’’ several local TV broadcasts, and served as a location for the cast and crew of the 2010 movie “The Company Men’’ starring Ben Affleck and Tommy Lee Jones.
