Standing on the Beacon Street sidewalk — the one in Hyde Park — the stone walls along the perimeter of the property signal there is an atypical home sheltered behind.

Located in the Fairmount Hill section of Boson’s Hyde Park neighborhood, this home was built in 1899 and is defined by its rubble stone exterior, sweeping semi-circular bays, and a dramatic round-arched entry recessed behind rugged, projecting stonework, as a Massachusetts Historical Commission researcher noted. Conical bay roofs and shingled gables are suggestive of famed 19th-century architect H. H. Richardson, though the actual architect is unknown.

The 33-square-foot foyer, with hardwood flooring in a herringbone pattern, provides access to a stairwell and rooms in the towers on the left and right — mirror images in shape and size but with differing duties. There is also a half-bath with a wall-mounted rectangular sink, exposed pipes,, wallpaper, and Nantucket beadboard wainscoting.

To the left is the formal living room with the expected curved walls, hardwood flooring original to the home, a chair rail, large double-hung windows, and a recently swept stone-faced fireplace that echoes the exterior. There is a central chandelier, and indicative of updating, recessed lighting. Two cast-iron radiators remain.

To the right is the formal dining room with a chair rail, large windows, cast iron radiators, and hardwood flooring. There is a central chandelier, recessed lighting, and heating vents high on the walls. There is also a stone-faced fireplace, a portion of which bends around the corner, pulling guests into the kitchen.

The kitchen is rectangular with tile flooring and stainless steel appliances. On the right is a cabinet with a butcher block top, a gas range, and a double sink seated into a separate cabinet with a granite countertop. The sink is directly under a double-hung window with a honey-toned appearance. On the left side is the refrigerator and a set of newer blonde-toned cabinets, some with glass doors that curve around a bend in the room.

A 51-square-foot pantry leads from the kitchen to a family room with an electric fireplace and a window looking out to the backyard.

A door in the deepest corner of the kitchen opens into the 240-square-foot sunroom with exposed stone walls, a large gas fireplace, a vaulted ceiling with recessed lighting, and more of the large double-hung windows so popular in this home. Heating is from a baseboard and the flooring is light colored, helping to create a four-season lounge for reading or entertaining. A door leads to the backyard.

Access to the upper level is from the stairway in the foyer. With its decorative newel posts, curved balusters, and gentle directional changes, the stairway is a hallmark of the home’s age and the craftspeople who built it.

The second-floor hallway is like a Boston traffic circle (though not as hazardous). The hallway also has built-in cabinets.

The 305-square-foot primary bedroom is on the far left rear corner of the home and features a bay window, hardwood flooring, and a ceiling fan with integrated light. The closet and full bath are opposite each other, separated by a double-hung window. The bathroom has a single vanity with a white sink underneath a stained glass window. White subway tile is installed halfway up the walls. Behind a curtain is the shower with the same white subway tiles on the floor and the walls.

Also off the main hallway is a fully updated bathroom with a bowl-sink vanity, brushed metal fixtures, and black-and-white patterned floor tile. The shower/bath combination behind a curtain has a white subway tile backsplash.

There are three other bedrooms on this level, two of which are in the towers. The third floor has the remaining two bedrooms, one of which is the largest in the house at 358-square feet and has access to the attic.

The current owner has made key improvements, including a new roof (2025), new windows (2024), a full deleading certification (2023), basement waterproofing with twin sump pumps, and an electric vehicle charger.

The full basement has a concrete floor and a bulkhead. The home has a two-car garage and space to park four more vehicles outside.

Bill Patterson of Craft Realty in Boston has the listing. As of press time, an offer had been accepted on this property.
