Geographically, this condo is in one of Boston’s oldest and historically popular neighborhoods — the North End — but stylistically, it also offers a little bit of Maine, a larger piece of New Hampshire, and a smidgen of Lynn and Acton.
A Maine artist made some of the recycled glass lights, while the flooring is oak reclaimed from New Hampshire barns. The banquette off the kitchen is sourced from stores in Lynn and Acton, and the countertops and handcrafted stairs are from New Hampshire.
The building was constructed in 1870, and the material of that era is fully present: Heavy wood beams cross the roughly 20-foot-high ceiling in the living area in this two-level unit. The door to the condo opens into a lower level awash in sunlight from double-stacked windows even though it is below grade. Powered shades with sunscreen and blackout settings offer privacy.
To the immediate left of the entrance is an 18-square-foot pantry with automatic lights. To the right, one finds custom cabinetry with clear glass doors and a bookcase under the stairs.
The open floor plan encompasses the living and dining areas as well as the kitchen. A gas fireplace under four double-stacked windows anchors the 182-square-foot living area. Recessed lighting dots the home.
The dining area is 100 square feet and features that custom banquette, but at 83 square feet, the U-shaped kitchen is a nook unto itself and has its share of great features: custom solid-maple cabinets with halogen underlighting, New Hampshire patina slate counters, high-end stainless-steel appliances, an industrial-grade stainless-steel sink, and a white subway tile backsplash.
To reach the bedroom, the journey is via stairs with wooden posts, steps, and handrails, as well as clear glass instead of balusters. The stairs end in a hallway overlooking the first floor.
The second floor delivers an extraordinary closet tally given the overall size of the unit. There are five closets in all on this level, and each has custom shelving. The 24-unit building also offers storage in the common laundry room.
The bedroom is 158 square feet and hosts two closets —one with bifold doors, the second barn-style with rope pulls. The space is sunny, compliments of a pair of windows, and the ceiling comprises more of those burly beams. The full bath contains a shower behind frameless glass; a custom vanity with a basin sink and a New Hampshire patina slate top; a wide mirror; and a retractable mirror. The shower has rain shower and hand-held heads.
Despite the name of the street, the building is in one of the quieter sections of the North End steps away from a park. About half of the units are owner-occupied, and the condo fee includes the heat, hot water, sewer, and trash removal, among other necessities. There is no parking.
