Composed of three brick buildings, the 174-unit Monterosa condo complex was built in 1981, but this unit looks as if it were constructed yesterday. But make no mistake: This is not the condo version of a “McMansion;’’ the two-bedroom unit is not one inch larger than it was 37 years ago.

Still, nearly everything has changed. (Spoiler: The ceilings remain concrete slabs.)

An elevator ride to the sixth floor leads to a stuccoed hallway and eventually the front door of the 1,050-square-foot penthouse. And just inside, the transformation is obvious: The flooring is ceramic tiles mimicking wood in various shades, a rustic touch added in 2015 that is spread across the entire main living space.

A few steps in and to the right is the kitchen. It is in an L-shaped alcove all its own, where the refrigerator is stainless steel, not the black-lacquered style Kenmore offered in the 1980s. All of the appliances are updated and stainless steel. There is an island with white cabinets, seating, and a dark granite top bathed in the light of two pendants fixtures. The white cabinets have slow-close hinges, and the backsplash is tile.

The main room offers an alcove for a dining area, which presently accommodates a table for four, and a larger space for couches and a television. There is also a door to a balcony big enough for two seats and a table in between them. There is nothing but crowns of trees and rooflines in the viewscape.

At the opposite end of the unit, the ceramic tile gives way to carpeting in the two bedrooms. The smaller of the two has a casement window, a closet with sliding doors, and something of a cove ceiling created by air ducts.

The full bath has a tub/shower combo and a white cabinet with a white-porcelain rectangular sink perched on a butcher-block counter. The flooring is ceramic tile.

The master suite offers a bedroom space with a single casement window, a deep walk-in closet with built-in shelving, and a full bath with a single vanity, its white cabinet topped with a stone counter. The shower has a subway tile surround and a ceramic tile floor.

A closet with a stacked laundry setup completes the space.

The development offers an in-ground pool and club room and does not allow pets. Nearly 150 of the 174 units are owner-occupied.

Patricia Fitzgerald of Brad Hutchinson Real Estate in Melrose is the listing agent. As of press time, an offer had been accepted on this property.
