Home of the week: South End single-family hints at the best of San Francisco
It’s a small piece of San Francisco in Boston’s South End. Where the city by the bay has the “painted ladies,” Rutland Square has a smattering of Venetian Gothic town homes with rounded lancet windows, elaborate archways, and polychromatic exteriors that stand out amongst its neighbors.
The distinctive look continues inside this four-story, single-family home, where the first of several white marble fireplace mantels grace the sun-splashed dining room on the first floor.
To the rear of the first floor is the kitchen, wholly 21st century, with a six-burner gas stove, high-end stainless steel appliances, a granite-topped prep island, and extensive maple cabinetry. A set of French doors leads to a small patio that looks out to the alley.

The uppermost floor has two equally sized bedrooms. The one at the rear of the house has the best view in this home – the view is of the Prudential Center, the now-ever changing skyline of the Back Bay and downtown, and a few neighboring roof decks.
The second bedroom on this floor draws lots of natural light from a set of bow windows. There’s plenty of closet space in both bedrooms. The full bath has a shower and a skylight.
The lower level is a studio-style in-law suite with a kitchenette, a full bath, and direct access to the alley. The rear wall is mostly windows, making this ground level space quite sunny.
There is a small elevator with a graceful wooden interior that travels from lowest level to top floor. The property includes two deeded parking spaces in the rear alley.
