An artist’s home in Tiverton, Rhode Island — where the interior walls are practically a gallery — has hit the market. With 4,904 square feet of living space on a 3.8-acre lot, the property sits among the pine trees about a 30-minute drive from Providence.
“It’s an old house. It’s full of character and it’s full of stories,” Barbara Donahue, who has owned the property with husband Mark since 1984, said. “It’s got so many, truly so many, possibilities here. It’s kind of endless,” Barbara said.

Built in 1890, the main house boasts six bedrooms, three bathrooms, two fireplaces, and two kitchens. Its original hardwood and stone-tiled floors complement large windows and a wrap-around porch. The exterior is painted red, while inside, wooden walls and ceilings meet yellow and orange painted surfaces. Barbara has adorned them with her own artwork, including patterns, landscapes, and portraits making it a cozy and colorful space.
“When we painted it, everyone was like, ‘Oh, wow, that’s amazing,'” Barbara said.

The property also includes a cottage currently being used as an art studio. Barbara has used the space to teach art to local school children. But she says the cottage, which includes a kitchen and bathroom, can serve a variety of purposes for the new owner.
“[The cottage] is just a spectacular space for anybody, even if they’re not artists, you know, it’s just, it’s pretty special out there and it’s really different than the house, totally different,” Barbara said.
The home offers privacy within the woods while remaining close to Tiverton schools and amenities, according to Donahue. The driveway is lined with pine trees, and creates a dramatic effect that Barbara believes it could even be used to host an art show. Outdoor features include a waterfront sunset view and a full-size pool.
The home was put on the market June 8 at $2.3 million, and as of publication it is listed at $1.9 million. The couple, who has raised three children in the house, are ready to scale down and move to Maine.
“What I’m hoping is that somebody can come here and live here the way we did and enjoy it just the way it is and try to figure out what they want to do themselves,” Barbara said. “This house is full of so much love and so much color.”
Amber Poirier Donahue with eXp Realty holds the listing.
