It may be in the heart of Wellesley Hills, but 75 Maugus Ave. is straight out of mid-century modern California.
The five-bed, 5.5-bath mid-century modern home, which was built in 1957, is on the market for $2,475,000.
“The biggest thing that I’ve experienced is the complete surprise,” said David Ferrini of Coldwell Banker Realty, who has the listing. “You pull up to the house, and you think you’re going into this little, teeny house. Then you get in there and you’re like, ‘Wait a minute, this house doesn’t end.’ Every person that’s come to see it has their jaw drop.”
On the market for the first time in 50 years, the 5,267-square-foot home, set on just under an acre, is tucked on a cul-de-sac that backs up to Centennial Reservation Trail. A stone walkway leads to the double front doors, which welcome you into a foyer with a fun patch of greenery to one side.

Continue into the 539-square-foot living room, where hardwood floors gleam in the sunshine streaming through three expansive windows overlooking the woodsy backyard. A working fireplace, one of three in the home, completes the space.
The living room connects to the 240-square-foot dining room, home to an elegant chandelier with candle-like lights and floor-to-ceiling windows. Glass double doors open to a vaulted three-season porch with a flagstone floor.

Back inside, the dining room has a doorway to the 277-square-foot kitchen, which you can also access from the front hallway. The long space features extensive cabinetry, a double sink, windows overlooking the front yard, and double ovens. The refrigerator and dishwasher are stainless steel, and there’s enough room for a breakfast table.
Down the hallway, you’ll find a family room that measures 325 square feet. It features a wall of built-in bookshelves, a fireplace, and a wide window looking out to the backyard. One of the most unique and mid-century modern features of this home is the built-in bar to the left of the fireplace, reminiscent of an episode of “Mad Men.” A door provides easy access to the back deck, which measures 172 square feet.

On the other side of the hallway, there’s a bedroom suite with a double closet, two windows, and a bath with a tub; fun, peach-colored tiling; and yellow floral wallpaper. You’ll find two more secondary bedrooms farther down the hall — one with carpeting, the other with hardwood floors — and the primary suite.

The primary suite (226 square feet) boasts built-in shelves, a double closet, a built-in desk, a vaulted ceiling, skylights, and double sliders to a private 46-square-foot balcony. The en-suite bath doesn’t disappoint, with its baby-blue tiling, double marble sinks, shower, and extensive cabinetry in the dressing area.
“It has numerous, like 30, custom-built drawers and closets,” Ferrini said.

Back in the foyer, a staircase takes you to the lower level. There, you’ll find a 528-square-foot recreation room with three windows mimicking the ones upstairs, as well as another fireplace. The basement also has a full cedar closet, a 153-square-foot laundry room, several storage spaces, and access to the 552-square-foot two-car garage.
Another mid-century surprise on the lower level is the vintage pink bathroom.

While the home is of the traditional California ranch style, it does have an unexpected second story. From a staircase in the kitchen you can access all three levels. Upstairs, there’s a 494-square-foot bedroom with an en-suite bath.
“That’s really a second primary suite on the opposite side of the house,” Ferrini said.
The mid-century modern home is 0.4 of a mile from the Wellesley Hills stop on the commuter rail.
Open House Sunday, Jan. 19, from noon to 2 p.m.
