One of Weston’s most legendary properties is officially on the market for $2.145 million.
Built in 1904 and constructed from large, round logs presumed to be early telephone poles, the 4,650-square-foot home was originally known as “Thurston Bungalow.” The building, located at 147 North Ave., is affiliated with the nearby Drabbington Inn or Drabbington Lodge, a prominent summer resort that later became known as a series of senior-living facilities and is now referred to as “Manor on North.”
Thurston Bungalow was built as a winter residence for the Thurston family and later became a men’s lodge. Designed by George E. Strout, this house is a twist on the bungalow form for use in a summer resort setting, the town of Weston shared.
The six-bedroom, five-bath home is filled with original historic details, including six fireplaces, beamed ceilings, and custom millwork. Step up onto the covered front porch, and enter the expansive foyer, which features a fireplace of its own. On the left, a formal dining room features another fireplace and also has a butler’s pantry. To the right, the light-filled living room is the ideal spot for entertaining guests.
As you continue through the home, you’ll find an elegant study. Behind that is the family room, which features an elaborate stone fireplace and built-in bookshelves under a beamed ceiling. It opens out to a private deck. The family room is open to the eat-in kitchen, where you’ll find a cozy window seat that provides a view of the backyard. The kitchen connects to a mudroom with storage, as well as a full bath, and an entry into the house from the yard.
“You do have a lot in our outdoor space here,” said Denise Mosher of Coldwell Banker Real Estate, who has the listing.
Set on 1 level acre, the backyard features a tennis court and gazebo.
“It feels like you’re in a little oasis by yourself,” Mosher said.
The home is just around the corner from Cat Rock Park, which has 40 acres of conservation and hiking trails.
The second floor holds all six bedrooms, including a beautiful primary suite with a brick fireplace. The suite features a bathroom that’s fully renovated and has a bidet and walk-in glass shower. A second home office could easily function as an additional bedroom or playroom. There’s also a second-floor laundry room.
On the lower level, you’ll find a full bath, gym, and additional utility and storage space.
Set back away from the street, the home shares a driveway with the house in front of it.
