Listed for $2.49 million: A Winchester Colonial featured on ‘This Old House’
The butler’s pantry serves several roles: coffee station by day, wet bar with a wine chiller by night, and a pass-through to the dining room anytime.
The cozy Colonial at 42 Cabot St. in Winchester retains all the charm of a turn-of-the-last-century home without showing its age.
Built in 1920, the home was tastefully restored in the early 2000s on the show “This Old House.” Since then, it has undergone a handful of renovations to keep things fresh, including new floors and a new island in the kitchen, listing agent Sven Andersen of Andersen Group Realty said.
Listed for $2,499,000, the 4,753-square foot-home features five bedrooms, four full bathrooms, and one half bathroom.
Despite the updates, the home has retained its Colonial character, with a gabled roof and twin dormers. Inside, the first-floor rooms are spacious and bright, thanks to the soft colors of the walls and abundant windows.
The first floor is home to a sizable kitchen with soapstone counters, a marble island, and a small dining area. Earthy-green cabinetry and soft pendant lights over the island add a calming touch to the open space. There’s also a butler’s pantry that plays a number of roles: a coffee station by day, a wet bar with sink and wine chiller by night, and a pass-through to the dining room anytime.
The dining room is one of the most striking spaces in the home, with steel-gray walls of built-in bookshelves that make it feel more like an eat-in library than a formal dining space.
Also on the first level is the living room, a roomy space made cozier by a wood-burning fireplace with an intricately carved mantel. Two sets of French doors on either side of the fireplace open to a sunroom the seller used as an office/playroom, and a third set leads to the backyard.
The wood floors throughout this level — most of which are original — were stripped and resurfaced during one of the renovations, Andersen said, giving them a more natural finish.
The second floor is home to two bedrooms and the primary suite, which features an expansive walk-in closet with wood built-ins, a private deck, and a bathroom with a steam shower, tile floor, and a double-sink vanity with granite countertops. There’s also a full bathroom with a combination shower/tub on this level.
The other two bedrooms are on the third floor, as well as a full bathroom with a tub and a pedestal sink.
Despite the home’s age, the property comes with modern amenities. The finished basement includes a wine cellar and a media room, as well as an ample laundry room with a washer, dryer, and sink. However, it’s the property’s “Old-World charm” that really makes it special, Andersen said.
“This property has a lot of unique attributes to it. I think these homeowners really took the time, energy, and effort to make it right,” he said.
As “This Old House” put it, “instead of a shirt brought home from the store, it’s an old favorite just back from the laundry.”
