It appears that steam-powered engines weren’t the only thing that Francis and Freelan Stanley had a knack for building.
A few years before founding Stanley Motor Carriage Co., the twins known for their steam-powered cars constructed a headquarters for Newton’s Hunnewell Social Club. The building went up in the 1890s, and, according to a 2012 Facebook post by the Stanley Museum in Kingfield, Maine, the brothers spent a good chunk of time there while living in the Massachusetts city. The 84 Eldredge St. location later became the Pomroy House community center before being converted into condominiums. Now, a buyer can nab the parlor-level unit for $575,000.
