Whimsical Barnstable home now for sale was once a playhouse
Barely visible from street or the water, this Barnstable home was constructed in the 1920s by the family who lived in the large house across the street. They built 1187 Craigville Beach Road as a playhouse for their children, who liked to write and perform plays over the summer, Jack Cotton, listing agent from Sotheby’s International Realty, told Boston.com.
Now the structure has been turned into a true single-family home and is listed for $895,000. It is still owned by the same family that built it almost a hundred years ago.
Rumor has it that the playhouse’s Dutch door inspired Walt Disney’s design for his Cinderella’s Castle.
The home’s owners told Cotton that Disney spent some time in the Cape area, because he frequently met with Herbert Kalmus, the inventor of technicolor and a Cape Cod resident. (He even has a beach named after him.)

“When [Disney] was here he fell in love with the front door and that’s what inspired Cinderella’s castle,” Cotton said, emphasizing that the story is all based on oral history from the seller.
Along with the four bedrooms, two full bathrooms, two half bathrooms, and 3,366 square feet of living space, the property also comes with a separate painting studio and boathouse.
“The whole building is a work of art,” Cotton said. “It’s so whimsical. It’s withstood hurricanes and, while it needs updating, it’s held up very well.”
