If you live in the Plymouth Pinehills village you are only ever a short walk away from nature.

That’s because this community, which has over 3,000 acres on the South Shore in Plymouth, builds on only one third of the land, while keeping two thirds open for nature and recreational activities.

It’s one of the reasons the Pinehills was just named “Community of the Year’’ at the Best in American Living Awards presented by the National Association of Home Builders, and also received another award for “Best Mixed Use Community.’’

“The Pinehills creates a total community that respects the topography and environment with a quintessential New England feel. It is the whole package,’’ said the 2015 judges in a statement.

There are 37 neighborhoods within the Pinehills, comprising what will eventually be 3,065 homes of all types, ranging from apartments to condos to single-family homes. About 1,800 homes have been built since the village opened in June 2001.

The Pinehills is part of the world’s third largest pine ecosystem and is home to 10 miles of walking trails, along with more than 2,200 acres of natural and recreational space.

“What’s different is the land plan and the open space which is one of the really important features,’’ Donna Tefft, director of sales and marketing for The Pinehills, told Boston.com. “But also the fact we can have residential, commercial, a village center with shops, as well as recreational and agricultural [space].’’

At the Village Green, as it’s called, there are over 25 shops and other necessities, including restaurants, doctors’ offices, an inn, a fitness club, a golf club, and more. All services, including a market, are open to residents and the general public.

“We are building a community that is walkable and creates a community where people feel like that can move to and feel like they are a part of something,’’ Tefft said. “We have houses that let people be close to things that are comfortable.’’

The community has a variety of clubs residents can join as well, ranging from an American Revolution study group to a hiking club to a ping pong group.

Correction: A previous version of this article said there are eight different neighborhoods in Pinehills. There are actually 37. It also misattributed quotes by Donna Tefft to Deb Enstrohm, who also works in the marketing department for The Pinehills.
