A Dorchester Victorian close to T and the beach

This Savin Hill home has a welcoming porch up front and a long backyard and deck in the rear.

This Dorchester Victorian home has four bedrooms and a living room in the home’s turret Barry Chin/Globe Staff

This classic Victorian sits on a gentle slope and has a welcoming porch framed by flowering plants and a flat backyard that can be viewed from a broad wooden deck.

One family has called it home for 60 years.

The broad foyer leads to the living room, which has a high, patterned ceiling. The focal point, however, is the rounded wall from the Victorian’s distinctive turret that has four windows and is lined with white trim.

Accessed from the living room via a pocket door, the dining room offers a fireplace and a built-in china cabinet with deep shelving. This is a sunny space, surprising given the rich, dark-wood trim on the window and door frames.

The floors, original to the home, include face-nailed oak planks in the living and dining rooms.

Savin Hill Victorian gets lots of light

The kitchen, however, has been modernized. Updated eight years ago, this space has light-colored Corian counters and extensive cherry cabinetry, a double sink, and space enough for a four-person table centered under a lighted ceiling fan. Spill gravy on your good linen napkins? The laundry room is off the kitchen, in a bath with a shower.

A broad stairwell with an intricately carved newel post and a stained-glass window leads to the second floor and four bedrooms, one of which is used as an office and exercise room. The master bedroom is bathed in the light from three windows and fits a king-size bed.

Older homes are notorious for minimal closet space, but there are no such limitations here. The master and one of the other bedrooms on this floor have walk-ins, and the closets in the other bedrooms are deep. The bedrooms share a bath with a tub and shower.

The fifth bedroom, found on the third floor, is sizable and has one window. The remainder of the floor is attic space.

Some areas of the house need cosmetic work. The style is classic, but the roof, windows, and electrical have been updated. The home, set on a tenth of an acre, is a short walk from Malibu Beach and the Red Line’s Savin Hill T stop.
