Massachusetts tops the nation when it comes to the price tag on that classic four-bedroom, two-bath house in the suburbs, a new report finds.

The Bay State ranks number one with an average listing price of $577,080, Coldwell Banker Real Estate reports.

Massachusetts edged out California ($497,778) and smoked the Empire State ($347,519) for the dubious honor of having the country’s most expensive listing prices.

The state also moved up from second place last year, when it was edged out by Hawaii. Connecticut ($423,117) came in fifth and New Hampshire ($391,547) ninth.

Nebraska is the least expensive place to pursue a four-bedroom, two-bath home apparently, with an average listing price of $139,111.

Meanwhile, six of Massachusetts’ wealthiest suburbs landed on Coldwell Banker’s list of the top 25 most expensive communities in the nation. Only the Golden State, with 12 of the nation’s priciest suburbs, had more.

Wellesley topped the list for Massachusetts, with an average listing price of $1,090,089, which comes in at number 10 nationally.

“Inventory is very small at this price point,’’ said Melissa Dailey, a top Coldwell Banker agent in Wellesley. “We have had bidding wars this fall.’’

In fact, Wellesley edged out Greenwich, Connecticut ($923,690), the favorite suburb for billionaire hedge fund moguls, as well as Santa Barbara, California ($1,040,827), which even had a popular hit 1980s TV show about the super rich named after it.

“We have people who are transferring from other parts of the country and Wellesley always comes up as a top town in their search,’’ Dailey said.

Cohasset ($923,889) came in at number 18, followed by Lexington ($918,600) at 21, Hingham ($891,342) at 23, Newton ($884,767) at 24 and Marblehead ($875,347) at 15.

Springfield is the most affordable city in the state, with an average listing price of $151,040, with Worcester ($259,144) number four, Haverhill ($304,510) number seven, and Marlborough ($377,439) at 10.
