In the front parlor of this Newton Centre Victorian, Newton-based designer Sarah Cole of Sarah Cole Interiors (sarahcoleinteriors.com) bridged her clients’ disparate tastes — the Brazilian wife adores energetic pieces, while the New Englander husband favors traditional décor — with a peacock blue velvet sofa. “We tried to find a middle ground,” Cole said. “For them it’s the color blue.”
Embroidered diamond drapery complements the plaid ottoman and floral patterns in the adjacent entry. Abstract art by Wendy Briggs Powell from Elizabeth Home Décor & Design in Newton pulls geometric blocks of colors used in other rooms into the space.
Visual Comfort & Co. lamps anchor the sofa. “Every room needs some black to ground it,” Cole said. She loves how the lamps’ zigzag silhouette echoes the drapery fabric.
The Mulberry Home plaid wool on the ottoman also balances the couple’s aesthetic preferences. “The pattern is traditional but the palette — teal with a zippy red stripe — is vibrant,” Cole said.
Leather chairs provide another layer of texture and material in a room with abundant upholstery and pattern. The durable material is great with kids, and the narrow arms don’t eat up space. Meanwhile, the custom-cut broadloom carpet covers almost the entire room, drawing the eye outward so it appears larger.
