Home of the week: Canton home custom-built for a former Patriots defensive end
The driveway slices up the landscaped hillside. It travels past a curving retaining wall before plateauing at a red-brick stairwell that winds as it rises to meet the front door of this ranch — a home custom built for former Patriots defensive end Ron Berger.

The driveway slices up the landscaped hillside. It travels past a curving retaining wall before plateauing at a red-brick stairwell that winds as it rises to meet the front door of this ranch — a home custom built for former Patriots defensive end Ron Berger.
(Berger, who played for the Patriots from 1969 to 1972, lived here for three years, the listing broker said.)
Inside, there is a wide ceramic-tile foyer and the first sign that this is a mid-century modern home with minimalist lines. The foyer connects to the sunken living room straight ahead, where the view of the hilly backyard, visible through tall windows, competes for attention with a carved marble fireplace.
A left turn into a hallway off the foyer leads to the main wing. Here, the dining room features a bow window that nearly spans a wall, a chandelier, and doors connecting to an updated kitchen with a breakfast area. Its stainless-steel appliances counterpoint the white wood cabinets and quartz countertops. The ceramic stove top is electric and is built into a peninsula under a visually dramatic hood of stainless steel and glass.
See inside 46 Algonquin Rd. in Canton:
The kitchen connects to a family room dominated by a large brick fireplace with a half-moon opening. This space is, like nearly every room in this house, large and sunny. The corner holds a wet bar and a built-in glass cabinet, and a slider opens to the sunroom, itself a gateway to a backyard with a stone patio and rocky outcropping.
A right turn from the foyer leads to the bedroom wing, with the master suite positioned in the farthest corner. In the master, the bed is a step up from the sitting area. The suite includes a built-in makeup table, a deep walk-in closet, and a bath with a double vanity, separate shower, sunken soaking tub, and water closet with bidet.
The three other bedrooms (one now used as an office) share two full baths.
Ceiling heights are 9 feet throughout the first level, and the flooring is recently refinished oak.
A stairwell in the mudroom (with laundry area and half bath) off the garage leads to the finished basement, which offers an additional 1,000 square feet of living space. The basement has a playroom, rec room, utility space, storage, and a full bath with only a shower.
The 0.71-acre property includes an attached two-car garage.
The listing broker, Meredith Hall of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Milton, will hold an open house on Sunday, Oct. 2, from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
