The only known American killed in a hotel in Mali was born in Massachusetts, The Boston Globe reports.

Anita Ashok Datar was working in Mali for Palladium, an international development firm helping advance health, family planning, and fighting HIV, the Globe reports. She graduated from Columbia University, and served two years in the Peace Corps in Senegal before her time in Mali.

“Everything she did in her life she did to help others— as a mother, public health expert, daughter, sister and friend,’’ her family said.

The seven-hour attack on the hotel in Mali’s capital was carried out by a former al-Queda commander, according to the Globe. At least 20 people were killed before Malian troops and US and French special forces were able to free hostages.
