This father and son’s conversation about the Paris terror attacks is heartbreaking
“They might have guns, but we have flowers.’’
It’s hard to make sense of tragedies as adults. So how do we be both clear and comforting to children in the wake of such devastation as the Paris attacks on Friday that left at least 129 dead and hundreds injured?
One French father did a pretty great job making his son feel less scared—on TV, nonetheless—after a journalist from the French broadcast show Le Petit Journal asked the young boy, “Do you understand what happened? Do you understand why those people did that?’’ (The conversation took place entirely in French, but the alternate version of the video below provides English subtitles.)

In the video, the little boy responds to the journalist, “Yes, because they’re really really mean. … And we have to be really careful because we have to change houses.’’
The dad, crouching down next to his son, assures him that they don’t need to move.
“France is our home,’’ the dad says.
